Earth Day and Reverence for Life

Happy Earth Day folks! As a healer of both individuals and the planet itself, I believe the Queen Bee Mother Earth deserves her own post, and why not do it on Earth Day I say! I’ve been slowly deconstructing parts from my God equation (located here), and today Life itself gets front and center. In thinking about what I wanted to write today, I felt I have the gift to be able to speak for the planet herself as well as the rest of the animals and plants who do not have a voice. What would they want us humans to know?

Reverence for Life

In the brilliant book The Seat of the Soul by Gary Zukav, he dedicates an entire chapter to speaking on having reverence for all Life. Reverence is different than respect in that it has a veneration quality to it. When you revere something, it is sacred, awe-inspiring and divine. To revere Life itself, means we must revere ALL living things be it human, animal, or plant…not just the ones we like. Our planet is in crisis with climate change, polluted air and water, deforestation, food waste, biodiversity loss, food and water insecurity (and the list goes on and on). We as a human species are on the precipice of a massive shift where we could either live in harmony with the planet and thus sustain ourselves well into future generations here, or she can shake us off like fleas and squash the cancerous way we are living with her currently. I don’t mean to heap judgement or guilt on anyone by any means, however we do need to look at some cold hard facts. We are currently using the planet and her resources at a higher rate than is sustainable. The United States is one of the biggest culprits. With only 5% of the world’s population, it consumes 24% of the world’s resources. It would take 4.4 earths to sustain all of the population of the planet if everyone lived like us Americans (Source)! A large part of the reason we find ourselves in our current dilemma is that we have lost touch with our reverence for ALL Life. This can be broken down in several levels of our being and since I am a holistic healer, I will break this down holistically.

Spiritually

We are spiritual beings living in meat suits, and unfortunately a good chunk of humans have disconnected themselves from this fact. We have an entire chakra dedicated to spiritual connection, and when we shut this down, our human bodies will manifest disease. Having a strong spiritual connection is one of the best ways to help us revere Life. When you see ALL Life as spiritual then ALL Life becomes revered. When our spiritual connections are strong, we have easier access to feeling positive vibes such as care, compassion, empathy, love, grace, gratitude, joy, hope, trust, etc. When we have a strong sense of our spiritual selves, we see the oneness in others. We see others in us and us in others. Coming from this viewpoint, it is much easier for us to connect with ALL other humans, animals, and plants and to take actions that promote their health and well-being. When we live from the spiritual and a place of unconditional love and the golden rule (see here), it is much harder NOT to live with reverence for ALL Life. *Notice I said spiritual, and religious does not necessarily = spiritual.

More importantly, the earth herself is a living breathing entity as has been described by many near death experiences, intuitives, healers, and other spiritual people with knowledge and wisdom of the other side. This quote from a gay man’s near death experience from Dr. Liz Dale’s book Crossing Over and Coming Home, is a perfect example of this. “From space, one can see that the earth vibrates and pulsates, as though it was a living, breathing entity and not just some physical mass. Mother Earth is our Divine Mother. But there are terrible wounds and sores on different parts of her body, and she is gasping for breath, and calling out to God and to her children to stop the killing and destruction and hatefulness. She is dying and praying for all of humans to help her to heal and regenerate.” Many indigenous and pagan religions recognize this fact, and it is why they put such a high importance on the earth and all of its beings in their practices. Up until the past millennia or so and the rise of Western religions, capitalism, and modern day society, most of these ancient religions (and many present day earth-based religions) would consider it completely abhorrent to conduct acts such as mining, drilling, and consuming plants, animals, rocks, soil, oil, and gases in the way we are currently at this time. This act would be akin to sucking out Mother Earth’s blood and organs, so much care, thought, and prayer would go into preparing for these acts if they were going to harvest something from the earth. It would not be done unless it was absolutely vital for the lives of those living at the time. I can’t even begin to understand how any human would think it is ok to put animals through the process of factory farming which makes me get emotional if I think about it too much, but yet here we are. God and Mother Earth provide every single thing we need here on this planet so when humans and scientists create items that are not found in nature (GMO, unnatural drugs, plastics, etc.), they are upsetting the harmonic balance of the planet (and ultimately the Universe). It would do us good in this time now to listen to our indigenous populations and pagan sisters and brothers as they have much to teach us about the ways of our natural world which we have lost in our society over time.

Mentally/Emotionally

I am lumping the mental and emotional together for the purpose of this post as they essentially come from the same issue – ego, pain body, and lack of being present in the now. As we have disconnected from our true selves – our spiritual selves as conscious eternal beings, we have instead chosen to identify with our egos, or rather the personalities we temporarily embody while we are on this planet in the physical realm. We identify with our thoughts and our feelings instead of who we really are. Cut off from our spiritual selves, we begin to try to fill that void through consumption of material goods, services, and experiences to try and define ourselves and to make ourselves stick out and be more (or less) important than others. We reject the truth that we are all ONE and that EVERYBODY is special and thus we fight for individuality and separateness. We fall for the illusion that “me and my wants and needs” are more important that “anyone else’s wants and needs,” and even worse, we use those wants and needs to define ourselves. When we ultimately find that the pattern of materialism that we are trapped in ultimately never brings us true happiness, we continue to try to “find ourselves” or “make ourselves happy” and feed our egos through more things and more stuff and more things and more stuff and meanwhile the earth and all her living beings suffer. This obsession with our own egos, personalities, thoughts, and feelings also leads us to a place of judgement and labeling everyone and everything in order to maintain separateness and individuality. This results in us vs. them thinking and me vs. the world mentality as well as the creation of hierarchies and a way of life based on competition rather than cooperation. This causes conflict, chaos, war, and death, and the earth reacts to this negativity by giving us harsh earth energies back such as earthquakes, volcanos, hurricanes, tsunamis, drought, floods, etc. in order to try and wake us up and to match the energy we are giving to her.

The other problem of not living in the present moment creates a life of overconsumption through fear based false thinking. If one is always worried about the past and the future (which are constructs of the mind that do not actually exist), they end up in a “dog eats dog world” where “survival of the fittest” is the only way to prosperity. You live in constant fear of lack, do not trust Life or the Universe, and you keep hoarding and consuming your way forward before someone else wins and gets all the goods before you do. This is a shallow meaningless existence that only brings more suffering. I will write more about all this in the future, but Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth is a fabulous book on this in the meantime.

Physically

Finally, we get to the physical realm where we live. While many humans have disconnected themselves spiritually to live in their heads and feelings, many humans have also disconnected themselves from the physical realm and their own bodies (God help us if they have disconnected from both the earth and the spiritual – that’s a path that leads rather quickly to dysfunction, disease, and death). The lower three chakras of our energy system are specifically designed to keep us grounded to the earth, other humans, and to ourselves here in the physical realm, and a good chunk of humans have cut themselves off from these chakras and the planet itself. I will speak more about what happens before we are born at a later date, but we ultimately choose to come here to this planet, to live life in these meat suit bodies which contain our spirits, in order to have a physical experience for our own spiritual learning and growth. We can never truly be happy as humans living in this realm unless we come to terms with the fact that we are physical beings and that in this physical realm, certain physical realities exist. Science is real. Biology, chemistry, and physics are real. We need to eat, sleep, drink water, breathe, and get exercise to maintain human bodies. We need clothes and shelter to protect us and keep us warm while we live here. We need touch, love, human connection, and sex (and sex can be beautiful and healthy and is completely normal). When we cut ourselves off from our physical nature, we end up living a life of fear…fear of security, fear of safety, fear of other people, and fear of our own bodies and ultimately ourselves. We are not grounded in physical reality and instead live from our thoughts and feelings which are often not really that sane. This leads to and perpetuates the same overconsumption that comes from ego and pain body identification and the inability to be in the present moment that I listed above. We no longer are living at ONE with life on this planet, and if we have cut ourselves off spiritually, we are no longer living at ONE with Source/God/Universe/Our own Souls as the powerful creators that every single one of us is.

Tips and Exercises

While there is not much we can do about how everyone else is living, there are some changes we can each make in our own lives that could help change the planet. Be the change you want to see in the world, and the world will shift around you!

  • Here is a handy list of 100 ways to be more environmentally friendly – https://pelacase.com/blogs/news/100-easy-ways-to-be-more-eco-friendly
  • In The Seat of the Soul study guide, Gary Zukav has a great exercise to bring more reverence into your life. Set an intention for a week to treat every interaction with another individual (friends, relatives, employers, acquaintances, animals, plants, yourself, etc.) with reverence. At the end of the week, assess what looking at everyone and everything with a sense of reverence did for you. What did you realize about yourself and others? What did you create through this process? You can read and listen to him speak on the topic of reverence more here.
  • Before you buy anything or get rid of anything, ask yourself “What would Mother Earth want to tell me right now? What would the animals and plants say to me before I take this action? What would the humans that produced this say to you about how this affects their lives and the planet?” This can help us be more conscious in our choices and to help us be more aware of what we consume and how we consume it.
  • Try to get out in nature as much as humanly possible. Make a point of getting outside to a park, garden, yard or in nature daily. Also, try to do this from a place of presence free of distractions (no phones, computers, radios, headphones, etc.). You want to get connected with ALL of nature and grounded with the earth herself and that means hearing, seeing, touching, smelling, and tasting it; not just being in it.
  • If you are in a place in your life for this, consider taking care of an animal or some plants. When you connect with another living being in your home space, you will find a more grounded connection to the earth and its beings, and you will also help yourself emotionally, mentally, and spiritually by bringing more Love into your life.
  • If you want to try some healing work with the earth, try “Light Walking” which for me is walking around and sending healing light energy to Mother Earth and to trees, plants and animals. I personally love to go sit on trees, beaches and grass and flow reiki to the earth. If you intend to flow energy you will. Or if this isn’t your jam, try hugging a tree. Or sending good thoughts or prayers to the earth and it’s beings. Anything that sends and creates a vibe of peace and love to the Earth and its creatures will make a positive change for better energy on this planet.
